Honestly, I don't see a problem with continuing someone else's work. There are a lot of fan projects using original assets that continue online games after the company that made it decided to shut it down (Toon Town is one). I also think you are being transparent and are not claiming to be the original creator.
However, if you end up opening a patreon for this you instantly cross a line. Money received is money gained, no matter how good your intentions are.
Good luck, though! There are plenty of ways to go about this that pretty much everybody will be fine with.
Toon Town is not a good example since they had to remove any traces of Disney in the game or else they would get sued. This game already used stolen art that the artist asked to be removed, the fan could have made something new with the groundwork already laid out, probably thought their idea would be welcomed, but stuff like this brings a lot of drama. I doubt the fan will continue this because of the backlash.
You can't just rip off someone else's story, add to it and call it yours. Not only is it actually illegal (serious copyright infringement there) but it's reprehensible. If you wrote something, put it aside for a few years, then some stranger got it, posted it on the net and said they were continuing it without getting your permission to do it, you can't tell me you wouldn't be angry. What you should do is write your own story. There's nothing wrong with taking inspiration from an existing story or even making a similar interface or having similar elements, but to blatantly plagiarize someone else's work...
You didn't get permission to do this take it down
Yeah this just seems weird... abandoned or not you shouldn't just take someone's work for yourself without their input first. Not to say you have bad intentions or anything but this project is still very small and instead of using this as a stepping stone perhaps just write your own kinky project from scratch to be enjoyed?
I can see where you're coming from, but this is not really meant for it to be a project to be used as a stepping stone. I really just want to see it finished, because I know the disappointment of seeing a project not being done really stings, specially as someone who paid for it.
It doesn't matter, you still stole someone elses work. Take it down
I'm... not sure that you should be doing this without the author's permission, even if you aren't able to get in contact...
Honestly, I debated this a lot, but after not managing to get in contact with him through all the means I could, I think I can safely say the project has probably been abandoned. I was a patreon of his for some time, and I know others want to see the story go on, so why not try and continue it? Of course, if the author is bothered by that and contacts me I'll take the whole thing down. At least while it's in its beginning stages. If I do get to a point where we're really far along, I'll just consider it a new game.
Why not take the concept of the old game and make something new with it. This way you don't have to take anything down and save yourself the drama.
I agree with Chunkynuts.
Simply put, because I really liked the old game and want to see it at the very least finished. I paid for the patreon when it was still active and wanted to see it through. As I said before though, if the author does contact me asking to take the project down, I'll do so. So there shouldn't be any drama.
That's not how copyright works, mate. If this was a fan project, ehh, maybe - but you can't release this commercially (and yes that includes patreon). Like, legally you can't. Doesn't matter if the original is abandoned - that doesn't put it in the public domain.
It's good you're inspired, but take Chunkynuts' advice. Besides, you should cultivate your own creativity, don't chain yourself to someone else's work.
I think we're pretty well past copyright concerns here, considering the original author used the artists work without permission and was specifically asked not to, and then continued doing so, afair.
But i think we have a fine standard here: if the original author asks it to be taken down, it will be.
good luck, I can't wait to see where you go with this.
Thank you! As I said in the page I'll start by fixing a lot of the typos and changing up the sentence structure of what's already been written, and adjusting the pacing. After that, who knows! Any feedback is welcomed though.
